Your Mission... Should You Choose to Accept It

Mission statements are so 1990s, right? Wrong.

Having read the chapter on them in Dave Ramsey's EntreLeadership book, I realized they are still a necessity. I then realized our company didn't have one.

So it was off the conference room for my executive team and I. Our Mission: The Mission Statement.

I believe it was one of the longest and most productive meetings I have attended since we began our executive team training meetings.

We used the teachings of Dan Miller as a guide, identifying our core values and expressing them in the statement.

We went through at least two revisions over a three-week period and finally settled on the following:

Bossier Press-Tribune: A locally minded, unified team serving God and our community to the utmost of our abilities and resources. Utilizing an atmosphere that encourages fun, progressiveness, and focused effort, we aspire to a level of profitability that will improve our team members, their families, and the community at large.

We didn't stop there. We printed 5 x 7 versions of the statement, framed them, and placed one on each team member's desk. We wanted everyone to know, understand and execute the mission.

I was expecting some eye rolling when I put them on the first few desks. I didn't. In fact, our team members ALL expressed gratitude and appreciation for defining who we are in the statement.

If you don't have a quality mission statement, I encourage you to write one. It will clarify so much for you and your team.

Until Next Time...
